One of the classic metaphors for effective leadership and teamworking, though like all metaphors (theories) it is only partial. In some ways, we are moving away from this leader-centric view but we need to avoid throwing babies out with bathwater – see the recent Schumpeter post in the latest edition of the Economist

Thanks again for the comment Graeme. Did also read the piece at Economist that talks about bland, faceless leaders. I’m not sure I have the answer really altho the origin blog post talks about the very different types of leader that even a conductor can be.
Personally, I’d just settle for effective. Too much to ask?
